Call for proposals: Architecture for vehicular multimedia

By ITU News

The ITU Focus Group on Vehicular Multimedia has issued a Call for Proposals inviting contributions to the second phase of its work – the development of an architecture for vehicular multimedia.

The automotive industry is building on recent advances in information and communication technology (ICT) to introduce new ‘infotainment’ systems incorporating services such as Augmented Reality navigation, video streaming, and automated in-vehicle climate control.

The Focus Group is investigating where international standards could support the global adoption of these infotainment systems.

The Focus Group has documented innovative use cases of vehicular multimedia and their underlying technical requirements. In the second phase of its work, the group will propose the architecture, interfaces and protocols of the vehicular multimedia network.

Proposals are invited until 4 September 2019.

The proposals received will be discussed at the Focus Group’s upcoming meeting in Budapest, Hungary, 11-12 September 2019, to be held in conjunction with ITU Telecom World 2019.

ITU Focus Groups are open to all interested parties.

“Vehicles are becoming our third living space, alongside our homes and places of work,” says Jun Li, Chairman of the Focus Group and Deputy Secretary General of China’s Telematics Industry Application Alliance (TIAA). “In recent advances in multimedia, matched with the convergence of communications technologies and the ubiquitous coverage that results, carmakers see significant potential for a new wave of innovation in vehicular multimedia.”

The Focus Group is exploring the latest innovations in infotainment systems, with a particular focus on enabling factors such as intelligent voice interaction, interconnection between vehicular terminals and smartphones, and connectivity for high-precision navigation.

Its ultimate aim is to deliver a standardization roadmap identifying where new ITU standards for vehicular multimedia could take advantage of the integration of satellite and terrestrial communications that has enabled low-cost, wide-area coverage featuring high interactivity.
