While artificial intelligence, connected cars, and drones took center stage at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona this week, discussions surrounding 5G were also prominent. Those discussions included the testing and setting of standards for upcoming 5G systems that will be required power the increasingly voracious user demands for data as the Internet of Things (IoT) era rapidly gathers pace.

“The 5G Infrastructure Association (5G-IA), the private sector part of the European Union’s 5G-PPP initiative, isn’t for rushing towards 5G standardization,” reports Telecom TV. “Members of the 5G-IA certainly have a big appetite for new services, but the organisation says good things come to those who wait.”

“We are very attached to the respect of the 5G standardization process that is being defined, notably by 3GPP and ITU, for 2020 full commercial launch,” Jean-Pierre Bienaimé, Secretary-General of the 5G-IA, told Telecom TV on the sidelines of MWC.

“It’s the reason why we are coordinating this 5G trials roadmap strategy in order to encourage verticals and actors to make real-life trials and experimentations. But, of course, we are keen that this standardization process does not delay and we will, of course, encourage standards bodies to go as fast as possible in this process.”
